I can help you prepare for the LCMHCE, understand the requirements of the Idaho Board of Professional Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists, and provide guidance and supervision for your Hours and Documentation. Work with me 1:1 through video meetings to supplement the support you’re getting, which increases your chances of success!

Requirements for Clinical Licensure in Idaho:

  1. Education: Completion of a master's degree in counseling or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.

  2. Supervised Experience: Completion of 3,000 hours of supervised experience in the practice of counseling, including 1,500 hours of direct client contact. The supervision must be provided by a licensed clinical professional counselor or other qualified supervisor as defined by the Idaho Board of Professional Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists.

  3. Examination: Passing the National Counselor Examination (NCE) and the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).

  4. Jurisprudence Exam: Passing the Idaho Professional Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists Jurisprudence Examination, which covers the laws, rules, and ethical standards that govern the practice of counseling in Idaho.

  5. Application: Completion of the application for licensure and submission of all required documents and fees to the Idaho Board of Professional Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists.

  6. Background Check: Completion of a criminal background check.

Guidelines for supervisors of counselors from the Idaho State Board of Professional Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists:

Supervisors must have the appropriate license and credentials to practice counseling or marriage and family therapy in Idaho.

  1. Supervisors must provide regular, ongoing supervision to their supervisees. The frequency and duration of supervision should be determined by the needs of the supervisee.

  2. Supervisors must maintain a professional and ethical relationship with their supervisees. This includes maintaining confidentiality, respecting boundaries, and avoiding dual relationships.

  3. Supervisors must provide guidance and feedback to their supervisees on their clinical skills, ethical conduct, and professional development.

  4. Supervisors must maintain accurate and complete records of supervision, including the number and duration of supervision sessions, the topics covered, and any concerns or issues discussed.

  5. Supervisors must evaluate their supervisees' progress and provide timely feedback and recommendations for improvement.

  6. Supervisors must report any concerns about their supervisees' competence, conduct, or ethical violations to the appropriate authorities.

  7. Supervisors must ensure that their supervisees are aware of their ethical and legal responsibilities, including the obligation to report suspected child abuse or neglect.

  8. Supervisors must provide opportunities for their supervisees to engage in continuing education and professional development.

  9. Supervisors must ensure that their supervisees are practicing within their scope of competence and are providing safe and effective services to their clients.
