Spirituality & Existential Concerns: Finding Meaning in Life

Exploring Your Spiritual Path in Counseling

Life is full of deep questions. Who are you? And why the heck are you here? What is your purpose….? These existential concerns can weigh on your mind, especially during times of change, loss, or uncertainty. But if you're struggling with these questions, you're not alone. As a counselor, I help people like you explore their spirituality and find a sense of meaning, no matter what your beliefs may be!

A Holistic Approach to Spiritual Exploration

I welcome people from all spiritual backgrounds…whether you follow a structured religion, explore Eastern philosophy, or are simply seeking answers. My approach is shaped by years of study in Eastern philosophy, Christian principles, and personal experience with spiritual growth. You don’t have to believe in any one system to benefit from counseling that addresses your spiritual concerns. What matters most is that you have a safe space to explore your beliefs and find guidance in them.

Lessons from Eastern Philosophy & Ram Dass

My undergraduate studies in Southeast Asian philosophy gave me a deep appreciation for Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Teachings from Ram Dass, a spiritual teacher who blended Eastern wisdom with Western psychology, have also profoundly influenced my counseling style. One of his core messages—Be Here Now—teaches us to stay present rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. This principle is especially powerful when managing anxiety and existential uncertainty.

Another teaching from Ram Dass that resonates deeply with me is that challenges in life are "grist for the mill." Every difficulty you face is an opportunity for growth! When you approach struggles with this mindset, you can transform hardship into wisdom and strength.

Christian Principles & Spiritual Integration

While my spiritual journey has been shaped by many perspectives, Christian principles now guide my daily life. I strive to live by teachings such as loving your neighbor, practicing kindness, and seeking inner peace through faith. I still appreciate the profound wisdom in Buddhism and Hinduism and believe these traditions can coexist with Christian values in a meaningful way to help guide a worthwhile life.

One of the most powerful aspects of Christian faith is its emphasis on love and service. The Golden Rule "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"—is a guiding principle that fosters compassion and connection. Similarly, the practice of non-violence, emphasized in both Christianity and Eastern philosophies, reminds us to approach life with understanding and kindness.

The Power of Daily Spiritual Practice

Regardless of what you believe, staying connected to a higher power, whether you call it God, the Universe, or something else, can be a source of strength. I believe in the importance of daily prayer as a way to stay grounded and aligned with purpose. Even if prayer isn't part of your tradition, setting aside time for meditation, reflection, or gratitude can provide such clarity and peace.

Faith in the Universe: Trusting Life’s Path

At the core of spirituality is trust…. the belief that there is meaning and purpose in your experiences. Whether you believe in divine guidance or the interconnectedness of all things, faith in something greater can provide comfort and direction. As Mr. Fred Rogers once said:

"At the center of the Universe is a loving heart that continues to beat and that wants the best for every person. Anything that we can do to help foster the intellect and spirit and emotional growth of our fellow human beings, that is our job. Those of us who have this particular vision must continue against all odds. Life is for service."

This philosophy reflects my approach to counseling. My role is to help you explore your spiritual concerns, find meaning in your experiences, and develop a deeper connection with yourself, the Universe, and feel at peace with the world around you.
